Dzen

About

The “Dzen” project is a unique experimental sauna, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovative construction techniques.

The structure is built using large-diameter half-logs (ranging from 800 mm to 1.1 m), giving the building a massive and authentic appearance. The construction process involved custom-cut log joints and unique notching techniques, developed specifically for this project.

A key engineering feature is the combination of traditional log cabin construction with the Post & Beam method. The adjustable support posts in the technical area help compensate for natural settling, ensuring long-term stability.

Inside, the walls are perfectly smooth, while the exterior retains the natural log texture, creating a striking visual contrast. The sauna features intricately carved doors, massive decorative windows, and thick wooden benches, highlighting its distinctive style.

For heating, the signature “Valdo” stove was used, providing efficient and even heat distribution throughout the space.

The roof is covered with Shindelhand-split hardwood wooden shingles, and its finishing touch is the “Ohlupen”, a decorative log placed at the ridge, adding a traditional and artistic element to the design.

Energy efficiency

A custom insulation system was developed to optimize heat retention. Special attention was given to sealing log joints, ensuring minimal heat loss while maintaining the structure’s natural breathability.

Additionally, the Post & Beam construction with adjustable support columns enhances structural stability over time, preventing unwanted deformations and helping retain heat effectively.

Ecological materials

The project was built exclusively from natural materials, including massive logs, wooden shingles, and hand-carved details. The use of environmentally friendly wood ensures a safe and healthy indoor climate while enhancing the sauna’s aesthetic and functional qualities.

The “Dzen” project is an experimental sauna, skillfully blending traditional woodworking techniques with modern engineering solutions. Its unique architecture, massive natural materials, and well-thought-out construction make it not only visually impressive but also highly functional and durable.

This sauna is a perfect choice for those who appreciate unique designs, natural materials, and traditional architecture.
